Warrington Wolves secured second place in the First Utility Super League table ahead of the Super Eights phase with a thrilling 34-30 win over Huddersfield Giants at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The Giants had to win to avoid finishing bottom of the pile and looked like causing an upset when Danny Brough converted Craig Huby's try 10 minutes from time to put them 30-28 ahead.
However, Gene Ormsby's hat-trick of tries against his old club proved to be in vain as Daryl Clark crossed four minutes from time to seal victory for the hosts, who leapfrog Wigan Warriors.
Kurt Gidley converted five of Wolves' six tries, with Stefan Rathcford, Ben Currie, Ben Westwood, Chris Sandow and Ryan Atkins also going over.
The Giants' focus now turns to trying to avoid the Million Pound Match in the Qualifier Eights, with Aaron Murphy and Nathan Mason also crossing in a rollercoaster contest.
Warrington boss Tony Smith insists his side need to improve despite claiming second.
Smith said:"It was entertainment on a large scale with action, suspense and joy for the home crowd at the end.
"There were some brilliant passages of play and some fantastic tries but we invited Huddersfield into the game at times when we seemed to have taken control.
"It was frustrating and we need to be better, certainly next week."
Smith, whose side face Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup semi final at Leigh on Saturday, added:"Ben Westwood was outstanding and he was the best.
"Some of our attacking play was fantastic and it's not all doom and gloom but we gifted our opponents the chance to score too many points.
"Huddersfield are certainly not a bottom of the table team and they will be back soon.
"It's a shame they are in the relegation area because they are a tough team to beat."
New Huddersfield boss Rick Stone, who took over from Paul Anderson a fortnight ago, took heart from his side's performance.
Stone said:"We took some significant steps forward from last week.
"We just need to improve our concentration. We kept fighting, coming back and staying in the game,
"In a few weeks I'd like to think we will show some reward for our work.”
